Sky lanterns to be lit in memory of Malvern woman

A FAMILY will be releasing 51 sky lanterns into the air on Saturday (March 5) in memory of a former Malvern woman who died of lung cancer six months ago, aged just 50.

Elizabeth Hambrey, who lived in Malvern for 10 years while working as an Ministry Of Defence police officer, would have turned 51 tomorrow, and her family wanted to do something in memory of her.

They will be gathering at her daughter Samantha’s home in Clerkenwell Crescent, and releasing the lanterns between 7-9pm.

Mrs Hambrey’s husband Peter explained: “Elizabeth died on August 18, and my sons have been letting a lantern off on the 18th of each month ever since.

“She was quite well known in Malvern and, as we had moved to Portsmouth, there may well be a lot of people who she was very friendly with in Malvern who do not even know she has passed away.”

Each of the lanterns being released will contain a message from Mrs Hambrey’s friends and relatives.

“She was a wonderful lady and I have had so many nice messages from people that she knew or worked with over the years to go in the lanterns,” said Mr Hambrey.
