FRIENDS and family of a Merseyside soldier who died in Afghanistan will send hundreds of Chinese lanterns into the sky in his memory.
Lance Sergeant Mark Burgan, 28, of Southdene, Kirkby, was killed by a roadside bomb along with his commanding officer on Wednesday.
Devastated friends and family of the Irish Guardsman responded by sending a message of remembrance around Facebook and changing their profile picture to a Union Jack bearing the words “Burgo: You’ll Never Walk Alone”.
A message, copied and pasted across hundreds of Facebook profiles, reads: “Light up the sky for a true hero, Mark Burgan!
“On Tuesday night at 8pm, light a lantern to show how proud we all are that we knew a true hero and to show our respect.”
A large group is expected to gather near Mark’s parents’ home at Wignall Park, in Broad Lane, Kirkby on Tuesday at 8pm for the rapidly organised memorial service.
One family friend told the ECHO that Chinese lanterns were selling out in the area.
Although Lance Sgt Burgan’s immediate family are not thought to be in the area at the moment, friends are hoping to show their support with the light show.
